BHE Canada is seeking a Settlements Accountant to join their energy trading team, AlbertaEx. This role provides an exciting opportunity to join a growing team as AlbertaEx expands commercial operations in Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will play a crucial role in the ongoing development of BHE Canada’s energy trading and business strategy.

Summary

As the Settlements Analyst, your primary responsibility will be to support trading activities of the power trading team as it relates to settlements, reconciliation, financial analysis and risk control. You will review power trading activities with the Alberta Electric System Operator and US power markets, including the California Independent System Operator’s Energy Imbalance Market, with a focus on billings and
settlements. This includes review of trade data, transmission costs, utilization analysis, and settlements. This is a terrific opportunity for someone who has high attention to detail, an IT acumen, and adapts readily to changing priorities and business conditions.

Role Attributes

  • Implementation Support: Contribute to the successful launch of Energy Imbalance Market settlements processes, procedures, and software, ensuring readiness for our Energy Imbalance Market go-live date (May 2026)
  • Settlement Validation: Review and validate California Independent System Operator settlement statements for marketing activities. Compare official statements against internally generated shadow statements using industry tools (OATI, PowerOptix)
  • Invoice & Billing Coordination: Review weekly California Independent System Operator invoices, working with Finance to ensure timely approval, payment, and receipt of funds. Coordinate closely with Metering Service Providers and other stakeholders to maintain accurate settlements
  • Charge/Credit Validation: Validate Energy Imbalance Market charges and credits from relevant Balancing Authorities, ensuring accuracy for all scheduled power transactions
  • Stakeholder Relationship Management: Build and maintain productive relationships with trading counterparties, Energy Imbalance Market partners, and internal teams

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily Settlement Review: Examine and validate California Independent System Operator settlement statements for managed assets and marketing activities. Conduct thorough comparisons with shadow statements and monitor data from forecasting and outage management systems
  • Data Analysis: Analyze historical Energy Imbalance Market settlements, operational data, and other relevant information to support decision-making and optimize market outcomes
  • Outage and Limitation Assessment: Assess the impact of generation and transmission outages, as well as real-time limitations, on Energy Imbalance Market pricing and deviation charges
  • Billing and Settlement Execution: Perform billing and settlements for power marketing activities.
  • Validate charges/credits, issue invoices, and provide feedback to optimize real-time resource

  • Market and Regulatory Support: Support management in business case preparation, monitor market rules and regulatory changes, and track their impact on Energy Imbalance Market settlements
  • Meeting Participation: Engage in California Independent System Operator and AlbertaEx settlement meetings to identify and address billing or settlement inaccuracies
  • Dispute Management: Manage the Energy Imbalance Market dispute process and provide postmarket feedback to improve systems and processes
  • Compliance and Additional Functions:
    • Support the adoption and use of Energy Imbalance Market settlement tools
    • Offer insights on best practices for forecasting and data analytics
    • Represent the company in third-party coordination meetings as needed
    • Manage reporting and settlement duties related to Energy Imbalance Market participation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or equivalent progressive experience
  • At least three years of experience as a Financial Analyst or Operational Accounting, preferably in power or energy markets
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • Experience with power scheduling and settlement tools
  • Familiarity with energy generation, forecasting, and scheduling
  • Strong commercial acumen and analytical skills for process optimization
  • Solid understanding of energy markets and regulatory compliance
  • High computer proficiency and ability to analyze complex data
  • Excellent communicator and effective team collaborator
  • Capable of managing multiple priorities and performing under deadlines
  • Keen attention to detail and reliable problem-solving abilities
